What does a tree surgeon do?
Tree surgeons mainly fell and dismantle trees and carry out various pruning operations on trees. Depending on their knowledge and experience some tree surgeons can also help care for and give advice about tree health, pests and diseases and planting, carry our tree surveys or inspections.
Tree work can be very hazardous so it is best to leave it to the professionals who have been specially trained.
Tree surgeons can fell, cut down or dismantle trees of a variety of sizes. Sometimes this is necessary if the tree is diseased, dead or rotting. Occasionally they may pose a risk to buildings, people or utilities if they have been damaged by adverse weather conditions.
If your tree has dead, decaying or diseased wood a tree surgeon may be able to remove the affected branches.
To create more light and space under and around the trunk of the tree, a tree surgeon can remove the branches from the tree’s crown.
Trees that have to be restricted in size due to where they are growing can have their crown reduced by a tree surgeon and at the same time re shaped so the tree grows evenly.
Carefully selected branches removed by a tree surgeon at their growth points help keep a tree healthy, can give a tree a certain shape if required or restrict its size.
Do I need permission ?
Many trees have Tree Preservation Orders on them (TPO)s so if you are thinking of pruning or felling a tree you must check with your local council if the tree has a TPO before starting work. Some trees in conservation areas that do not have TPOs are still protected so you need to find out before undertaking any tree work what the situation is. The Town and Country Planning Act 1990 requires you to notify your local authority 6 weeks in advance if you plan to carry out works on trees in a conservation area and obtain permission from your local authority to carry out works on trees with TPOs.
There are circumstances where you can still carry out work on trees with TPOs or trees in conservation area for example if the tree is riddled with disease or unsafe but you much check with your local authority first.
If you look on your local council’s website under ‘planning’ you should find a section on trees where you will be able to download the relevant notification or permission form.
Is the industry regulated?
The industry is not regulated but the Arboricultural Association (AA) https://www.trees.org.uk/About-Us promotes a set of industry standards for tree care, tree management and health and safety. Suppliers can be a member of their Approved Contractor Scheme (ARB approved contractors) and consultants can be members of the AARC (Arboricultural Association’s Registered Consultancy (AARC) Scheme.
