Kitchen / Bathroom Electrics
There can be no rooms in a house where electricity and water have the potential to come together more than in kitchens & bathrooms. Kitchens with their proliferation of power sockets, white goods and cooking appliances and bathrooms with showers, power points and lights, repeatedly subjected to moisture and condensation on a daily basis.
This means that there is a heightened risk of electrical short circuits and the associated risk of electrocution of users and the potential for disastrous electrical fires in these areas. There is, however, no reason why water and electricity cannot live safely together in these areas if both plumbing and electric circuits are properly designed and installed using parts that meet recognised British Standards.
The 18th Edition is the term commonly used in the industry when referring to the latest British Standards BS 7671:2018 Requirements for Electrical Installations, IET Wiring Regulations.
Local authority building-control must be informed about any new electrical installation work before it starts, unless employing an electrician who is registered with one of the Government-approved Part P schemes, who will be able to self-certify his installation work. Part P states that anyone carrying out electrical installation work in a home must make sure that the work is designed and installed to protect people from fire and electric shocks.
By using a registered electrician the customer will not have to pay any building-control charges and the electrician will arrange for a certificate that confirms the work meets Building Regulations. This also gives access to a formal complaints procedure if the work does not meet Building Regulations.
